The Lady Denman ferry worked on Sydney Harbour for 67 years.  It's hull was built by a local boat-builder on the banks of Currumbene Creek in Huskisson, Jervis Bay, Australia in 1911 for the Balmain New Ferry Company.  The superstructure was completed in Sydney.  Huskisson had a small, but thriving boat-building industry up until the late 1970's when alternative technologies replaced wooden boats.  The Lady Denman is synonymous with Huskisson and is now on permanent display in the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum, not far from where it was first built.

It has always amazed me how these beautiful wooden structures are made up of essentially straight sticks of timber to create a rounded form that can withstand all the forces of the ocean.  What is most impressive, is the boat-builder "wandered out into the surrounding bush", selected the trees he wanted, felled them, often milled them himself and then put these individual sticks together to create these beautiful hand-made structures.

The pieces are composed from a radial geometry emphasizing the rounded forms, the "slapped-on" layer-upon-layer of paint and the warm timber texture of these wonderful old wooden ferries that worked the waterways of Sydney Harbour for decades.
