“wind – air that moves quickly as a result of natural forces” - Oxford English Dictionary
We can’t really see or hear the wind! We can only see or hear its effects when it “hits” something.
The intent of the work is to celebrate an awareness of a part of our climate... “the wind” ie where it is blowing from? how hard it is blowing? These three objects make us “see” the wind. They give us a sense of awareness of part of our climate, and, as a result, connect us more to our surrounding environment.
The towers abstract in an architectural sense, local past boat building and fishing village building fabric of hardwood, hardwood weatherboards, and steel. As well, they pick up on marine high visibility colours of buoys and warning signs to further impart a local seaside “playful” feel.
Each piece is primarily made from regional green hardwood (Eucalyptus). This often gives the designer some excruciating moments of pain as the work twists, splits, cups and "groans" as it slowly dries. As a result, each piece is slightly different and unique. To me, each stick of timber can tell a story. I love the hardwood gum veins, the knots, and will often put the perceived "worst bits” in the foremost locations of the piece, emphasizing its texture and beauty.
The towers are deliberately minimal. The design emphasis is on a celebration of function, through form, texture and materials.
